an endless song

hello!

I was thinking over the graduation quote that I sent over to the yearbook. It was:

"Let's sing an endless song. For you, for me, and for them"

An translated excerpt from The Blue Hearts' song 終わらない歌 (Owaranai Uta), or An Endless Song.

In specific, I referenced it in context of the ending of the 2005 film Linda Linda Linda (spoilers ahead). In it, the band performs the eponymous song リンダ リンダ (Linda Linda) as the closing act to their school's summer festival. The performance is successful, and for an encore play An Endless Song. I couldn't imagine a more perfect song choice.

Firstly, the song retraces feelings of uncertainty and fear of change.

"Until now, there were many times I thought I couldn't make it." "The moment of truth is always something scarier than death"

In the context of the film, it reflects on how the bands previous practices have been spotty, at best. In a more grandeur gesture, this means (at least for me) a fear of moving on, of failure, and of growing up.

The ending of their performance signals the end of the band itself. Unspokenly, it's clear that they will only meet again occasionally, if ever. They'll part ways and pursue their own life journey.

Let's revisit the line I put as my quote.

*"Let's sing an endless song. For you, for me, and for them"

I chose the quote because I think it holds a small, but beautiful sentiment coming from this "endless song". As I graduate, and as I continue moving through the stages of life I felt so far. It's an immensely scary prospect. Though it may be equally exciting, a part of me still clings onto this time.

Until the song comes to a close, we can hold onto right now for just a bit longer. The endless song signifies the yearning to stay in this moment forever. The relationship and memories that I've made are one I will cherish eternally. So let's all sing an endless song together. Let's want to live in this moment just a bit longer. To want to keep this memory from turning nostalgic. For me, for you, and for everyone that has ever.

yours truly,
